How to Hang Garland Around a Doorway Without Nails

How to Hang Garland Around a Doorway Without Nails

To hang garland around a doorway without nails, first choose a mounting method that suits the frame. A tension-mounted hanger needs two flat, solid opposing surfaces. Removable adhesive hooks need a surface their instructions allow. Then measure the garland route and plan the support points.

Choose a mounting method for your door frame

Method Suitable conditions Check before choosing
Tension-mounted garland hanger Solid, opposing frame surfaces; no adhesive needed. The mounting span fits, each end pad seats fully, and the bar clears the door.
Removable adhesive hooks The hook instructions allow the surface, and the finish is sound and clean. Load rating, indoor or outdoor use, and room to apply and remove the hooks correctly.

For adhesive hooks, check the permitted surfaces, load rating, and intended environment. Clean and dry the surface, press as directed, and wait the full time specified for that model before loading. Leave access to the removal tab or other release mechanism.

Check whether a tension-mounted hanger fits

The Baxvo garland hanger adjusts from 32 to 81 inches and has three movable holders. Check the mounting span, end-pad contact area, and door clearance separately.

At the planned mounting height, measure between the two surfaces where the end pads will press. Do not substitute the door slab or outer trim width. For double doors, measure the actual contact surfaces; with sidelights, confirm both ends bear against solid framing.

Measure between the mounting surfaces and check that each end pad seats fully.

Compare the usable width and height of each contact surface with the end-pad dimensions. Each pad must seat fully, without crossing an edge or resting only on raised molding. If fit is uncertain, provide front and side photos with measurements before buying.

The end pad needs a flat, solid contact surface.

Check that the bar clears the door, including any screen or storm door. Before using an exposed entrance, confirm the hanger, garland, and lights are suitable for those weather conditions.

Measure the garland and plan its supports

Use string to trace the top section, side drops, and any curves, then measure the string. The garland may extend beyond the opening, so its decorating width can differ from the bar’s mounting span.

Garland length example: a 36-inch top and two 72-inch sides total 15 feet before swags or overlaps.

Lay the garland flat and divide it into the top and two side sections. Start with supports near both top corners and the center, then adjust the holders to suit the main strand.

Support locations are adjustable; each support should carry the main strand.

Include lights, ornaments, and battery packs in the total load. Check it against the hanger’s stated rating and installation conditions. Spread decorations out so heavy clusters do not hang between supports.

Install the empty bar before adding garland

Adjust and secure the unloaded bar according to the supplied instructions. Place its ends at the same height on solid surfaces, with both pads fully seated. Confirm the bar does not tilt, rotate, or slide before loading it.

Secure the bar’s length adjustment and the holders’ positions separately. Follow the model’s instructions for the locking parts and directions.

Move the three holders into position and secure them. Let the flexible arms carry the main garland strand, keeping both side drops at the intended length. The supports should contact the main strand, rather than thin branches or light wires.

Once the main strand is stable, fluff the greenery and add lights and ornaments. Remove the garland before moving a holder or redistributing its length.

Troubleshoot sagging and movement

What you see What to check What to do
The top sags while the bar stays still. Does the center support carry the main strand? Is weight clustered there? Remove the garland, adjust the support or reduce local decoration weight, then replace it.
The garland slips while the bar stays still. Is the main strand seated securely, or is a support touching only thin branches? Unload and reseat the main strand. Check the securing method allowed for the hanger.
The side drops are uneven. Was the length divided correctly between the top and sides? Remove the garland, lay it flat, and redistribute the sections before replacing it.
The entire bar slides or rotates. End-pad contact, surface condition, and the locking mechanism. Unload immediately, check and reinstall. Stop using that position if movement continues.
Opening the door moves the garland or bar. Does the door catch greenery, light wires, or the bar itself? Move greenery or wires clear. Change the mounting position if the bar still obstructs the door.

Check the door and light cords

Slowly open, close, and lock the door; test any screen or storm door separately. Check for contact with the bar and keep greenery clear of the handle and latch. With lights unplugged, route cords away from door gaps and the threshold, and support the battery pack before reconnecting power.

Check the full opening path, including any screen or storm door.

To remove the display, disconnect power and take down the ornaments and garland. Support the bar while releasing its mounting mechanism. Remove adhesive hooks using their model-specific instructions, without pulling them straight off the finish.
